The Dogwood Festival Parade

This week brought the 59th Annual Dogwood Festival to Phoenixville. As a new resident, this was my first experience of it. It’s a week-long festival consisting of a carnival, the crowning of a Court (Dogwood Queen, etc.), and on the final day – a parade!

People began setting up chairs to save their seats early Saturday morning. All the streets along the route were packed with local folks smiling and ready for the festivities.

And I have to say – the parade does not disappoint! All sorts of local groups marched by, people in classic cars, school marching bands, floats, karate students, and dancers. Kids lined the streets ready, bags in hand, to scramble for the flying candy thrown by many of the parade participants!

Some of my favorite parts of the parade were the various troupes of Mummers who marched. Beautiful costumes, skilled musicians, and the willingness to be the disco-peacocks of the parade world…Mummers can’t be beat! Here are some snapshots:

    oh, my! i don’t know anything about mummers. i think i need mummer lessons!
