Hmm…I wonder what that’s an acronym for.

    Fire something?
    Farmer’s International Company?

    Very cool.

I don’t know the acronym, but it is certainly a “membership” plaque showing that that building had paid its annual dues to the fire company “F.I. Co.” and they would be the only fire house to respond if that structure was to catch fire, as seen in the movie Gang’s of New York. That’s really how it was. Fire houses competed for households, and many times as seen in places like the Society Hill section of Philadelphia, or on Elfreth’s Alley, there could be two or more fire houses represented on each block.
